We all have so many plain hair ties that seem to pop out of every drawer, purse, and box in the house. However, every once in a while, you might want to accessorize with something a bit more interesting than a plain elastic. With this easy DIY hair accessories idea you can make cute hair ties with tulle and spice up your plain hair ties.
First, let’s go over the things you will need – a plain hair tie, tulle, and invisible thread. You can find the things I used below:
To start, cut five 2″ wide and 6″ long strips from the tulle.
Then, weave the needle and the invisible thread along the edge of the 5 tulle strips. Gather the fabric to make ruffles and tie the thread in a knot, finishing the pom pom.
Repeat the same thing with the second color of tulle.
Sew the two pom poms together and then stitch them on the hair tie. Finish up the decoration by cutting some of the tulle to shape the pom pom.
Another option is to sew 3 smaller pom poms on the hair tie. To make these small pom poms, cut twelve 2″ wide tulle strips. Gather 2 of the strips to make a single pom pom. In the end you should have a total of six pom poms.
Sew the pom poms in pairs (you should end up with 3 pairs of pom poms). Finally, stitch the pom poms on the hair tie and cut the tulle to shape them.
Below you can see the DIY hair ties. You can also make matching hair clips using similar materials. I am planning on wearing these cute hair ties with a pair of fabric shoes I up-styled with tulle, sequins, and beads. Check out this blog post for the matching shoe decoration DIY idea.
