Cute flower pots are often quite expensive. However, you can decorate the plastic pots that come with the flowers you purchase or any plastic container you have at home. Here are a couple of simple and creative projects for decorating flower pots you can try at home. These ideas will give an interesting twist to any plain pot and plastic container out there.
1. Decorate a Flower Pot with Twine
To make this DIY decoration you will need a plain pot and colorful twine. I used materials similar to the ones below:
I love the colors of the twine rolls and was able to pick a shade that matches the rest of my patio. To start making the decoration, choose a place to be the back of the pot and tie the twine around the top. Cover the end of the knot with the twine as you wrap it tightly around the pot. Try not to leave any gaps by pushing the twine toward the top of the pot. If you want to use a second color, tie the twines in a knot and again cover the end of the knot when wrapping the pot. If possible, try to make the color change at the back of the pot so that all knots are aligned. Once the pot is completely wrapped, tie the twine in a knot and carefully tuck the end under the already wrapped twine.
To make this decoration more interesting, you can glue some beads, shells, or stones onto the flower pot. I used the seashells and the glue gun below:

2. Make a Flower Pot Decoration with Wooden Sticks
Another creative idea for decorating plant pots is using wooden sticks. For this project I used a black plain pot, twine, and wooden sticks. You can either collect some on your own if you are feeling more adventurous or get them online:
To make this rustic pot decoration, start by cutting three long pieces of twine. Use these strings to tie three knots – at the top, middle, and bottom of the wooden stick. Make sure to leave at least 4″ of twine to the left of the stick. Take a second wooden stick and tie it to the right of the first one, again making three knots. The closer together the sticks, the less visible the pot will be. Follow the same steps for the rest of the sticks and check regularly if the length of the tied sticks is enough to go around the pot. Once you have the desired length, wrap the decoration around the pot and tie the ends of the twine together.
To make this DIY flower pot decoration more interesting, I used the twine to tie a couple of wine corks to the sticks. Below is the final result:
If you have more plastic pots and containers to decorate, you can also check out our flower pot painting idea – another fun DIY decoration project that will help you make unique pots for less. The final piece of this DIY flower pot decorating project is to sort out the draining of the pots. You can get plant saucers (like the ones shown below) or save some money by buying small round Chinet plates. With the Chinet plates, you get 32 plates for just a few dollars more than buying 5 plant saucers. If you want to save some money, you will be better off opting for the Chinet plates.
Very cute idea! Might have to try this idea too!
Thanks! It was very easy to make too! I first tried weaving the twine through the sticks but this was a lot trickier (the twine didn’t stay tight enough). Making the three knots was a piece of cake though!
